Republicans push for later primary season in 2012

A Republican Party rules committee is recommending a later presidential primary season that would hold back all but two 2012 nominating contests until early March.

A Republican Party rules committee is recommending a later presidential primary season that would hold back all but two 2012 nominating contests until early March.

The plan would still let New Hampshire and South Carolina hold February primaries, and other states that hold nonbinding presidential caucuses or primaries could still go ahead of the party's timeframe without penalties.

The rules panel met Wednesday in Minneapolis to endorse the plan. It still must clear the party's national committee before going to the convention rules committee. It's scheduled to come before the Republican convention in St. Paul on Monday.

GOP spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson said the plan includes no new penalties for states that hold earlier primaries.
